About Michael:

Michael Skinner’s primary medium is watercolour.

He was born in London, England and first studied art at the Landsdowne College of Art in Bournemouth, England. He pursued a career in graphic arts initially in England and later in Canada. In Toronto, his career focus was on illustration in the advertising field, ultimately running his own illustration business. When advertising deadlines weren’t too deadly, he periodically dabbled in painting oils and acrylics to loosen up the preciseness required in illustrational drawing. He also took some life drawing studies at the Ontario College of Art.

The many years he spent sailing the waters of the Caribbean and the Bahamas stimulated a desire to capture the brilliant and translucent colours of the tropics. Watercolour seemed the perfect medium. He used the medium again to express the more subtle light and shades of the backwaters and marshlands of the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, where he lived on and off for almost fourteen years.

Now settled in the Georgian Bay area of Ontario, his paintings of this area reflect the pastoral scenery of the Beaver River Valley, the gentle and rugged areas of the Escarpment, the many facets of the Bay and the seasons that change the face of this very picturesque part of Ontario.

He has completed many commissions depicting the various areas where he has roamed and lived. His ability to capture the light and shade, the textures and nuances in both his landscapes and waterscapes, is only surpassed by his excellent execution of the boats he has painted – large, small, sail and power.
